Veterans Day Activities

Veterans Day Activities

Veterans Day is just a couple of days away! Today, we spend the morning learning all about the holiday. We started a KWL chart, read some fact cards about Veterans, and colored a mini book. My son loved the mini book...he thought the tank and airplane were way cool. He had to get out all of his tanks and airplanes afterward to play!

Tomorrow we will be working on writing an Acrostic poem about Veterans, and writing some "thank you" letters to mail to some friends deployed in Afghanistan.

We topped off the morning by making coffee filter poppies! You can find all of these activities in my Veterans Day Unit, here. Veterans Day Activities

How are you incorporating Veterans Day into your lessons?

25 Ways To Thank A Veteran

Veterans Day is just around the corner. Veterans Day is observed on November 11, and is a national holiday to honor and thank any person who has served in our Armed Forces. Here are some ways to celebrate the holiday, involve your kids, and say "thank you" to our Veterans! Comment below and tell me how you celebrate the day.
  • Simply say "thank you for your service!".
  • Shake their hand.
  • Buy a Veteran lunch (anonymously can be fun...this happened to our family recently and it was so great. My husband was in his uniform and we were eating dinner. When the server brought the check, she said it had been covered! Too cool!).
  • Buy them a cup of coffee.
  • Ask general questions about their experiences (avoid questions about specifics such as if they have had to use their weapon, etc.).
  • Listen to their stories.
  • Buy a buddy poppy from the VFW. The proceeds are used to help Veterans who need money, medical care, etc.
  • Visit a Veterans nursing home. They LOVE to see the kids and talk about their youth.
  • Send a care package to a Veteran. If you don't know a soldier personally, Soldiers' Angels is a great organization that can help point you in the right direction.
  • Sing patriotic songs. The National Anthem, God Bless America, You're A Grand Old Flag, and America the Beautiful are a few staples every child should know, imo. :)
  • Invite a Veteran to speak at your school or organization.
  • Honor the flag by handling it correctly. Teach flag etiquette.
  • Be there! Attend a Veterans Day parade or service.
  • Fly a flag at your house, place of employment, or classroom.
  • Know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
  • Write a thank you letter or card to a deployed soldier, or a Veteran in a nursing home.
  • Donate to causes such as the VFW, American Legion, etc.
  • Support a military family by offering free babysitting, making a hot meal, or meeting other practical needs.
  • If you own a business, offer a military discount to Veterans.
  • If you are in HR or business, offer a paid day off for Veterans day.
  • Volunteer to serve with the USO.
  • Volunteer to assist in a Veterans hospital or retirement home.
  • Teachers, incorporate a Veterans Day unit into your November planning.
  • Music teachers, plan a Veterans Day salute complete with choral, orchestra, and band groups performing patriotic songs. Invite Veterans to attend. Or better yet, take your performance to a Veterans home for those who can't make it out.
  •  Thank the Veterans' family for serving, too.
  • Check out this Veterans Day unit packed with information about the holiday, Veterans, our Armed Forces, and the history of the poppy and yellow ribbon. Also included are Thank You Veteran lined paper, and some other writing activities. Perfect for K-3!

Happy Pumpkin Day!

National Pumpkin Day

Did you know there was such a thing? I didn't! I love pumpkins, in all their orange glory. Pumpkin patches, books about pumpkins, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, roasted pumpkin seeds, and my all-time fav, Panera's pumpkin muffins. Yum..my. I've passed along my addiction to my son. He asks for them a lot.

We have been doing some fun pumpkin experiments here! We love the book "How Many Seeds In A Pumpkin?" by Margaret McNamara. After we carved our pumpkins, we made some predictions about how many seeds each pumpkin would have, how many lines, and whether they would sink or float. N thought they would sink since the pumpkins were so heavy. Surprisingly, they float!

In honor of National Pumpkin Day, head over to my TpT store and check out my Pumpkin Science Unit. It's a great addition to your pumpkin units, filled with activities about the life cycle, structure,  what happens in the patch during each season, recording sheets, and even fun Center ideas for a fun Pumpkin Day at your school or co-op. Hello!

These are the "Good Old Days"!

Welcome to my blog! I have been a blog junkie for quite some time. I finally decided to try something new and  join the blogging world!

I'm a firm believer that THESE are the "good old days". Time goes so fast with two littles, and I hope this blog helps me to be intentional about my time with them. The cliche "the days are long, but the years are short" is all too true, so this is my feeble attempt to hang onto them, haha.

I will be sharing some fun, creative, thematic units, music resources, educational ideas, crafts, and a glimpse into our military family. I also hope to connect with and learn from all of you!
Here we go!!
