25 Ways To Thank A Veteran

Veterans Day is just around the corner. Veterans Day is observed on November 11, and is a national holiday to honor and thank any person who has served in our Armed Forces. Here are some ways to celebrate the holiday, involve your kids, and say "thank you" to our Veterans! Comment below and tell me how you celebrate the day.
  • Simply say "thank you for your service!".
  • Shake their hand.
  • Buy a Veteran lunch (anonymously can be fun...this happened to our family recently and it was so great. My husband was in his uniform and we were eating dinner. When the server brought the check, she said it had been covered! Too cool!).
  • Buy them a cup of coffee.
  • Ask general questions about their experiences (avoid questions about specifics such as if they have had to use their weapon, etc.).
  • Listen to their stories.
  • Buy a buddy poppy from the VFW. The proceeds are used to help Veterans who need money, medical care, etc.
  • Visit a Veterans nursing home. They LOVE to see the kids and talk about their youth.
  • Send a care package to a Veteran. If you don't know a soldier personally, Soldiers' Angels is a great organization that can help point you in the right direction.
  • Sing patriotic songs. The National Anthem, God Bless America, You're A Grand Old Flag, and America the Beautiful are a few staples every child should know, imo. :)
  • Invite a Veteran to speak at your school or organization.
  • Honor the flag by handling it correctly. Teach flag etiquette.
  • Be there! Attend a Veterans Day parade or service.
  • Fly a flag at your house, place of employment, or classroom.
  • Know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
  • Write a thank you letter or card to a deployed soldier, or a Veteran in a nursing home.
  • Donate to causes such as the VFW, American Legion, etc.
  • Support a military family by offering free babysitting, making a hot meal, or meeting other practical needs.
  • If you own a business, offer a military discount to Veterans.
  • If you are in HR or business, offer a paid day off for Veterans day.
  • Volunteer to serve with the USO.
  • Volunteer to assist in a Veterans hospital or retirement home.
  • Teachers, incorporate a Veterans Day unit into your November planning.
  • Music teachers, plan a Veterans Day salute complete with choral, orchestra, and band groups performing patriotic songs. Invite Veterans to attend. Or better yet, take your performance to a Veterans home for those who can't make it out.
  •  Thank the Veterans' family for serving, too.
